Safety first — only re-enter when authorities say it is safe — then document and request help.

  1. Follow fire department / emergency guidance; do not re-enter until cleared.
  2. Watch for structural hazards, soot and unsafe electrics.
  3. Photograph damage before discarding contents.
  4. Ventilate only if told it is safe to do so.
  5. Send the referral form.
  6. Call your insurer.
